Women in Pain: Gender Matters Conference Announces Partnership with D.I.S.C. Spine and Sports Center for Inaugural Conference to be Held May 30 at City of Hope in Duarte

The conference is a joint-venture between the For Grace nonprofit, the City of Hope Medical Center and the Southern California Cancer Pain Initiative and is intended to provide support to women in pain and provide skills, knowledge, values, methods and sensitivities needed to work effectively for quality pain management for women in pain. An NCCAM-funded trial found that women who used self-hypnosis during a type of core needle breast biopsy experienced anxiety relief and reduced pain when compared with standard care.

A large core needle breast biopsy is usually an outpatient procedure that limits the use of anesthetic. Women having this procedure often experience anxiety because of the possibility of a cancer diagnosis in addition to the anxiety that patients typically experience during a medical procedure.
