In a school system where soda is on tap and french fries and catsup count as two servings of fruits and vegetables, good nutrition is obviously not being taught by example…
Well that might change, Congress has a new bill that aims to change the nutritional value and appropriateness of our school lunch program.
"We talk a lot about healthy nutrition, we teach the kids about the food pyramid, and then they go down the hallway and get the high fat, high sodium and high junk available in the vending machines," said Senator Lisa Murkowski, Republican of Alaska. "We need to be consistent. People are beginning to connect the dots between rising health care costs and obesity."
"Instead of a nutritious school breakfast and lunch in the cafeteria, (children) are enticed to eat Cheetos and a Snickers bar from the vending machines in the hallway," said Sen. Tom Harkin, an Iowa Democrat.
Well, duh. Does this surprise anyone?
In a nation where parents don’t know any more about nutrition that the kids and where those who do completely buckle at the slightest sign of resistance to discipline, it should be no surprise that obesity and Type II Diabetes are on the rise in the US.
We can thank the government for helping a bit, by changing the money-flow that supports this nonsense in the schools, but the problems still start at home.
The time is now to learn that we must take care of the body. We must stop assuming that there’s a magic pill to cure the results of our own bad habits.
