Meningitis From Undercooked Snails?

The Chinese media reports that the number of illnesses due to undercooked snails is up to 87.

Snails are ok. A little chewy but tasty enough when served with some nicely seasoned garlic butter. They're not something I really go out of my way to eat. I think the last time I had them was in Paris in 1993. I assume they were fully cooked. For some reason, the idea of undercooked, or raw, snails does not seem like something I would have even the slightest interest in.

Nope, I think I would say no to undercooked snails in just about any scenario I can think of.

According to the BBC News, "The Beijing Health Bureau said the infection was caused by processing problems at the restaurant, which did not eradicate eelworms in the snails."

Whoa! Who said anything about eelworms? I don't care if they're cooked or not. I'm darn sure I have no interest in eating eelworms! It also mentions these were Amazonian snails. Nothing like shipping snails around the planet…complete with parasites! Did these get picked straight off the rocks?

In the future, make my snails "well done" and hold the eelworms.
